The Rice Village, also known as West U or The Village is one of Houston oldest and most well known shopping areas. Unlike the indoor and air-conditioned Houston Galleria, the stores are located in strip centers creating a pedestrian friendly shopping extravaganza. Shoppers will find all the national chains along with numerous one-off local boutiques. Since the entire retail district of the Rice Village is only a few blocks, please just park their cars and walk from store to store. But be warned, it can be extremely hard to find parking during peak shopping season.

The Rice Village is also a social hub for students (Rice University’s campus is a just a few miles away) and young professionals looking for great nightlife, and the streets are literally filled with young people hoping from bar to bar on weekend nights. The village is also home to the River Oaks Theatre which shows the Rocky Horror Picture show weekly and involves an intense about of audience participation.

With so many students and young professionals, real estate in the Rice Village can be quite affordable if you choose to rent an apartment of townhome. On the hand, there are also lots of nice homes near the Medical Center that can easily run over a million dollars.
